Travel information

Getting to San José:

Costa Rica is usually accessed to by air, but land travel could be an option for some countries.

  • Air: Most people travel to Costa Rica by air to the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in Alajuela. There a a few international flights to the Daniel Oduber Airport (LIR) in Liberia, but this second option is not recommended since it is more than five hours away by road to the venue of the conference (it's closer to some beaches, though). Several airlines serve SJO. There are direct flights to North, Central and South America and also to select destinations in Europe. The airline directory for the airport can be found here.

Once at the airport there are taxicabs that can take you directly to your hotel (orange cabs are the official airport taxis, red cabs are a cheaper option but they are not supposed to pick up at the terminal). There are also buses that will take you from the airport to downtown San José. Vans can be hired inside the terminal. You can also find car rental companies there.

Uber is widely used in Costa Rica, however it's not regulated and its legality has been challenged by the government. In view of this we do not recommend its use. We recommend that you DO NOT take any form of transportation that does not involved legally marked vehicles (you might receive offers from illegal cabs or vans after exiting the terminal).

  • Bus: There are also bus connections to the neighboring Central American countries. There are many companies that travel to other Central American countries, especially Nicaragua. Among the most traditional bus services is Tica Bus. These bus services have terminals in the downtown area.

Getting to San Pedro:

The venue is in San Pedro de Montes de Oca, which is a separate city to the east of San José, even though they are very close and there is no clear indication of where the limit between the two is. To get back and forth between the two you can use taxicabs (use the red official ones and make sure the driver turns on the meter) or buses. It's even possible to walk (a half hour walk).
